Sibiu, the perfect idyllic setting for learning and studying in the heart of Transylvania
Sibiu, this beautiful city in Transylvania, is well-known for its German architecture and medieval buildings and towers, as well as for its enchanting landscapes and its culture and people. Among the natives of the city of Sibiu, there are the poet and translator Oskar Pastior, the space flight pioneer Hermann Oberth, the scholar and the founder of the first Romanian language school Gheorghe Lazăr, as well as the current president of Romania, Klaus Iohannis. Sibiu was the European Capital of Culture in 2007, along with Luxembourg. Among its cultural sites, it has the Brukenthal National Museum, the ASTRA Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization (Open Air Museum in Dumbrava Sibiului), the Steam Locomotives Museum and many others. Furthermore, The Sibiu International Theatre Festival, the annual international celebration of the performing arts has become, since 2016, the largest performance arts festival in the world.
The roots of the “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu
The roots of this modern and dynamic university go as far back as the Middle Ages. Two honorable mentions of its history are: the Saxon Academy of Law (1844) and the Andreian Theological Seminary (1874). The University, in its current form, was established when “King Ferdinand I” University of Cluj took refuge in Sibiu between 1940 and 1945, during World War II.
Scientific and interactive activities
The University has its own publishing house and edits 15 scientific, economic, medical, historical or agricultural journals. The Publishing House of “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu was established 20 years ago, having a good tradition in technical books and academic textbooks printing.
The university organizes scientific events such as international and interdisciplinary conferences. The Rector of LBUS, Professor Ioan Bondrea, Sc.D., Dr.h.c., explains: “During a year, we have more than one hundred events taking place in our University, ranging from international conferences to national conference workshops. We are aware that the today’s University is an essential component of the educational system, which assumes a leading role in specialized professional training, opening up new horizons through its contribution to the balanced development of society. LBUS proposes a unique space for the development of cultural and social dialogues. Thus, one of our goals is to have a better international impact, but also an important impact on our community. That is why we continue to organize different types of events such as, for example, The Researchers’ Night”.
The University has a very strong exchange in the engineering field, based on two main domains in which The Faculty of Engineering is active: the computer sciences and the robotic manufacturing. The Faculty of Sciences benefits from the help of a very powerful Research Centre. In addition, the University has a well-established partnership with “Radu Stanca” National Theatre of Sibiu, LBUS being partner in the organization of the famous Sibiu International Theatre Festival. Mr. Rector, Professor Bondrea, explained that his colleagues from The Faculty of Economics and from The Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Food Industry and Environmental Protection initiated a project meant to turn Sibiu into a well-known European gastronomic region – in 2019, Sibiu will be the European Region of Gastronomy – and, therefore, the University plays an active part in promoting the traditional food of Sibiu.
LBUS has recently received a donation of 4.2 million euros from the Hasso Plattner Foundation with the main objective of supporting, developing and promoting the University’s scientific activity. Thus, LBUS will set up the Hasso Plattner Knowledge Transfer Institute. Young researchers, teachers, students will work in this Institute, together with specialists from different companies and research areas for the development of innovative technologies and products.
The students and the international connections
Professor Bondrea considers that one of the strongest points of the University is its educational process and the quality of its graduates.
One of the priorities of “Lucian Blaga” University in Sibiu is the institutional internationalization. LBUS focuses on encouraging educational and research processes, fostering intercultural understanding, creating a strong international community, creating new intercultural programs and, above all, developing a genuine culture dialogue that is so necessary today.
Mr Rector explains: “We are eager to invite all the potential students and researchers in Transylvania, to LBUS. It will be a good opportunity for all foreign students and scholars to start studying or conducting research projects in our University. Founded on the tradition of the 230 years of higher education in Sibiu, LBUS is one of the most competitive universities in Romania. Furthermore, it proposes a unique space for the development of cultural and social dialogues, Sibiu county being a model of multiculturalism for the modern society”.
Be smart, come to Sibiu!
The university has two mottos: “One university, one thousand identities” and “Be smart, come to Sibiu”. And, as Lucian Blaga, the Nobel prize nominee and patron of “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu, said once “After we have realized that life has no meaning, there is nothing else we can do but give it a meaning”, that means that while being smart and realizing that life has no meaning without knowledge, there is nothing else to do but come to Sibiu and immerse in the university’s one thousand knowledgeable identities.
